UPI fraud cases in India crossed ₹2,000 crore in 2025. Scammers are getting smarter — using fake payment links, QR code tricks, screen sharing fraud, and impersonating bank officials. This guide covers every major UPI scam tactic and exactly how to protect yourself.
⚠️
Key Fact: UPI is designed so that you must enter your PIN to SEND money. No one can pull money from your account without your PIN. If someone is asking for your PIN, it is always a scam.
01 The "Collect Request" Trick
This is India's most common UPI scam. A fraudster sends you a UPI "collect request" — which looks exactly like a payment arriving. They call you saying "I'm sending you ₹5,000 — just approve it." But when you enter your PIN to "accept", you're actually sending them money, not receiving it.
🚩 How to Spot It
- Someone calls offering to send you money via UPI for OLX/Facebook sale
- They ask you to "approve" a payment request in your app
- You're asked to enter your UPI PIN to "receive" money
- Any request where you need to do anything to receive money
✅
Remember: You never need to enter your PIN or approve anything to receive money on UPI. Receiving is automatic and passive.
02 Fake QR Code Scams
Scammers share a QR code via WhatsApp or message, claiming it will send you money. In reality, scanning and paying any QR code always means you are paying. There is no such thing as a QR code that sends you money.
⚠️ Common Scenarios
- OLX/Quikr buyer sends QR code to "pay" you for your item
- Electricity board / government sends fake QR for "refund"
- QR code pasted over legitimate payment QR at shops
- Fake charity or donation QR codes after disasters
03 Screen Share / Remote Access Fraud
Fraudsters posing as bank customer support, TRAI officials, or telecom companies ask you to install apps like AnyDesk, TeamViewer, or QuickSupport. Once installed, they can see your screen in real time — including OTPs, PINs, and banking apps.
🚩 Red Flags
- Caller says your SIM/bank account is being blocked and you must install an app
- Request to install any screen-sharing or remote-control app
- Being told to open your banking app while they "help"
- Any unsolicited call about KYC update requiring app install
🚫
Rule: No bank, TRAI, or government official will ever ask you to install a remote-access app. Hang up immediately.
04 Bank Official Impersonation
Scammers call posing as SBI, HDFC, ICICI or RBI officials warning about "suspicious activity" on your account. They then ask for your card details, OTP, or UPI PIN to "verify" your identity or "stop the transaction."
⚠️ What They Ask For
- Your 16-digit debit/credit card number and CVV
- OTP received on your phone (to "verify" your identity)
- UPI PIN or net banking password
- Aadhaar number + OTP for "KYC update"
✅
Golden Rule: Your bank will NEVER ask for your OTP, PIN, or full card number over a call. These are secrets only you should know.
05 Fake Refund / Cashback Scams
You receive a message or call claiming you're due a refund from Amazon, Flipkart, electricity board, or a government scheme. To "process" the refund, they ask you to click a link or pay a small "processing fee." Either way, you lose money.
🚩 Warning Signs
- Unsolicited call/SMS about unclaimed refund or cashback
- Link to "verify" your bank account to receive refund
- Request for small fee (₹1-10) to "activate" refund — this is a trick to get your payment details
- Government scheme refund requiring Aadhaar-linked UPI payment
06 8 Golden Rules to Stay Safe
✅ Always Follow These
- Never enter your UPI PIN unless you are intentionally paying for something
- Never share OTP, PIN, or CVV with anyone over phone, chat, or email
- Never install AnyDesk, TeamViewer, or any screen-sharing app on a caller's request
- Verify the UPI ID carefully before paying — scammers use IDs like "SBI.care@upi"
- Enable transaction limits on your UPI apps (most allow ₹5,000–10,000 daily limit)
- Report UPI fraud immediately: Call 1930 (National Cyber Crime Helpline)
- File a complaint at cybercrime.gov.in within 24 hours for best chances of recovery
- Verify suspicious payment requests by calling back on the official number, not the caller's number
